Gerður Helgadóttir (1928–1975) was a famous Icelandic artist. She was known for making sculptures and beautiful art from stained glass. Her work can be seen in many places, especially in churches across Iceland.
Gerður studied art in several countries. She went to the Art and Craft School of Iceland (MHÍ). She also studied in Denmark, Italy at the Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze, and France at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. These schools helped her become a skilled artist.
Amazing Artworks
Gerður created many different types of art. In the 1960s, she started making sculptures out of iron. These were geometric, meaning they used shapes like squares and circles. She was a pioneer in Iceland for creating these kinds of abstract, three-dimensional artworks. This means her art didn't show real-life objects, but rather shapes and forms.
Her stained glass art is very well-known. She designed beautiful glass windows for six churches in Iceland. Two of her most famous stained glass works are in Skálholt Cathedral and a church in Kópavogur.
In 1973, Gerður made a very large mosaic in Reykjavík. It was placed at the Tollhús building in Hafnarstræti. This mosaic was one of the biggest artworks ever made in Iceland at that time.
Awards and Recognition
Gerður's talent was recognized during her lifetime. In 1974, she received a special award called the Order of the Falcon. This is a high honor given in Iceland.
