Gerald Archibald Arbuthnot (born December 19, 1872 – died September 25, 1916) was a British soldier and politician. He was a member of the Conservative Party. Arbuthnot served in the UK Parliament and fought bravely in the First World War.
Early Life and Family
Gerald Arbuthnot was born on December 19, 1872. His father was Major General William Arbuthnot. His mother was Selina Moncreiffe.
He married (Mary Johanna) Dulcie Antoinette Oppenheim on February 6, 1894. They had three daughters together. One of their daughters, Cynthia Isabelle Theresa, married a rower and financier named Ian Fairbairn.
A descendant of Gerald Arbuthnot, James Arbuthnot, also became a Member of Parliament. James served in Parliament from 1987 to 2015.
A Career in Politics
Gerald Arbuthnot worked in government before becoming an MP. From 1895 to 1899, he was a private secretary for the Board of Agriculture. He also served as an assistant private secretary for other government departments.
In January 1910, Arbuthnot was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the area of Burnley. He served in Parliament until December 1910.
Serving in World War I
When the First World War began, Gerald Arbuthnot joined the military. In 1914, he became a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Later, he served in the Grenadier Guards as a second lieutenant.
He fought in important battles during the war. These included the Battle of Ypres. Sadly, Gerald Arbuthnot was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme. He was 43 years old when he died on September 25, 1916.
He was buried at the Citadel New Military Cemetery in Fricourt, France. In November 2018, his name was added to the UK Parliament's World War One memorial. This happened after a historian noticed his name was missing.
