Gerald Rose facts for kids
Gerald Hembdon Seymour Rose (born July 27, 1935 – died May 5, 2023) was a British artist. He drew pictures for many children's books. In 1960, he won a special award called the Kate Greenaway Medal. This award is for the best children's book illustrations by a British artist. He won it for a book called Old Winkle and the Seagulls. His wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Rose, wrote the story. The book was published by Faber and Faber.

About Gerald Rose
Gerald Rose was born in Hong Kong on July 27, 1935. His father was from England. His mother was from Borneo. She was adopted by a missionary and went to school in Hong Kong.
During World War II, his father was captured. He became a prisoner of war. Gerald's sister and mother were held in a civilian camp. After the war, Gerald and his sister grew up in Lowestoft. This was their father's hometown.
His Art Education
Gerald Rose went to the Lowestoft School of Art. He also studied at the Royal Academy. In 1955, he married Elizabeth Pretty. They had met while they were both art students. They had three children together. They stayed together until Elizabeth passed away in 2020.
Starting Their Book Journey
Gerald and Elizabeth Rose started making children's books. Elizabeth wrote the stories. Gerald drew the pictures. Their first book, How St. Francis Tamed the Wolf, came out in 1958.
The next year, Gerald was a runner-up for the Greenaway Medal. This was for his book Wuffles Goes to Town. He was highly praised for his work.
Winning Awards
In 1979, Gerald Rose won another award. It was called the Premio Critici in Erba. This award is from Italy. He won it for his book "Ahhh!" said Stork, which came out in 1977.
Later in his life, Rose lived in Hove, East Sussex. He passed away on May 5, 2023. He was 87 years old.
