Sir Gerald Lally was an Irish soldier who also became a French military officer. He was born in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland, and passed away in 1737.

Gerald Lally was the second son of Thomas Lally. His mother, Jane, was the sister of Theobald Dillon, 7th Viscount Dillon. Gerald also had an older brother named James Lally.

He fought as a soldier for King James II in Ireland. After a major event called the Siege of Limerick (1691) ended, Gerald moved to France.

Life in France

In France, Gerald married Anne-Marie de Bressac in 1701. They had a son named Thomas Arthur Lally.

In 1707, he received a special title. He was made a Baronet by James II's son. This son was known as James III. This title was part of the Jacobite system, which supported King James II and his family.

Military Career

On July 28, 1708, Gerald Lally became a Lieutenant Colonel. He served in the famous Dillon's Regiment. This regiment was named after his first cousin, General Arthur Dillon.

Later, on February 20, 1734, he was promoted again. He became a Brigadier General in the French army.

Later Life and Family

Sir Gerald Lally died in November 1737 in Arras, France. His son, Thomas Arthur Lally, took over his title.

His grandson was Gérard de Lally-Tollendal.
