Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James Lally was an important Irish soldier and a supporter of King James II. He lived a long time ago, in the 1600s, and was part of a big historical event called the Jacobite movement. He died in 1691.

Who Was James Lally?

James Lally (sometimes called O'Mullally) was a landowner and politician from a town in Ireland called Tuam, which is in County Galway. He belonged to a well-known Irish family, the O'Mullallys (or Ó Maolalaidh in Irish). Their family lands were in an area known as Tullindaly, about four miles north of Tuam.

James was the oldest of five brothers. His parents were Thomas Lally and Jane Dillon. Jane was the sister of a nobleman named Theobald Dillon, 7th Viscount Dillon.

Lally and the Patriot Parliament

James Lally was chosen to represent Tuam Borough in a special meeting called the Patriot Parliament in 1689. This Parliament was held by King James II. After the Jacobite side lost the war, James Lally's lands were taken away. He was also declared an "outlaw," meaning he was no longer protected by the law.

Life in France and Final Days

In 1690, James Lally traveled to France. He went with his cousin, Colonel Arthur Dillon. James became a leader in Colonel Dillon's army regiment. Sadly, he was killed in battle at a place called Montmélian in 1691.

His brother, Gerald Lally, also went to France. Gerald later became the father of Thomas Arthur Lally (1702–1766). Thomas Arthur became a famous soldier in France, known as Baron de Tollendal and Comte de Lally.
