Gerda Dendooven was born on May 10, 1962. She is a famous illustrator from Belgium. An illustrator is someone who draws pictures for books. Gerda has won many important awards for her amazing work. Some of these awards include the Gouden Uil, the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs, and the Boekenpauw. She has won the Boekenpauw award many times!

Early Life and Art School

Gerda Dendooven was born in 1962 in a place called Marke, Belgium. When she grew up, she went to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. There, she studied something called Vrije Grafiek. This means she learned about different ways to create art and illustrations.

Her Career as an Artist

Illustrating Children's Books

Gerda started her career in 1987. She illustrated her very first children's book. It was called Geen gezoen, vlug opendoen and was written by Ed Franck. After that, Gerda drew pictures for many books by different authors. Some of these authors include Herman Brusselmans, Toon Tellegen, and Bart Moeyaert. She also worked with Elvis Peeters, Michael De Cock, and Wally De Doncker.

In 1996, Gerda was nominated for a very special award. It was the Hans Christian Andersen Award. This award is given to people who create wonderful children's books. Gerda has also won awards for books that she both wrote and illustrated herself. For example, she won a Boekenpauw in 1990 for her book IJsjes. She also won a Boekenpluim in 2006 for Soepkinders. For her book Hoe het varken aan zijn krulstaart kwam, she won two awards in 2010: a Zilveren Griffel and another Boekenpluim.

She also won the Vlag en Wimpel award twice. The first time was in 1998 for illustrating the book Nietes welles. The second time was in 2015 for writing her book De wondertuin. In 2017, Gerda won the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs for her book Stella, ster van de zee. She was also nominated for this award in 2015 and 2016.

Working in Theatre

Besides illustrating books, Gerda Dendooven has also written stories for stage plays. In 2001, she worked on a play called Bremen is niet ver. She worked with other talented people like Geert Hautekiet, Bart Moeyaert, and Ianka Fleerackers.
