Early Life and Architectural Beginnings
Gerdy Troost was born in Stuttgart, Germany, on March 3, 1904. Her father, Johannes Andresen, was also an architect. After finishing her education, Gerdy began working in her father's architecture business.
It was there, in 1923, that she met Paul Ludwig Troost. They moved to Munich in 1924 and got married there in 1925.
Designing Important Buildings
After her husband passed away in 1934, Gerdy Troost continued their architectural and design work. She teamed up with Paul Ludwig Troost's former business partner, Leonhard Gall.
Together, they oversaw the building of several important projects. These included the Haus der Kunst (House of German Art), a large art museum. They also worked on redesigning the Königsplatz square and building the Ehrentempels (Temples of Honor) in Munich.
Working with Leaders
Gerdy Troost became an important adviser on architecture and design. She continued this role until the end of World War II. In 1943, she received a large gift of 100,000 Reichsmarks.
She was known for being one of the few people who could disagree with Adolf Hitler about art and architecture without fear. Hitler often listened to her advice on these topics.
Life After the War
After World War II, there was a process called denazification in Germany. This process aimed to remove former members of the Nazi Party from positions of power. Gerdy Troost was classified as "less responsible" during this time. She was given a fine and was not allowed to work for 10 years.
Once this period ended, Gerdy Troost started working again. She lived in Schützing, a town near the Chiemsee lake in Upper Bavaria. She remained good friends with Winifred Wagner after 1945.
Gerdy Troost lived a long life and passed away in Bad Reichenhall on January 30, 2003, at the age of 98.
