The Gering Courier is a newspaper that comes out once a week. It shares news with the people of Gering, Nebraska. Even though it's about Gering, it's printed in Scottsbluff, a nearby city.
History of the Gering Courier
The Gering Courier started way back in 1887. A man named Asa B. Wood created it. It was the very first newspaper in Gering. At first, it shared news that supported the Republican political party.
By the mid-1910s, the newspaper was well-known. Another newspaper, the Alliance Herald, even called it one of the best papers in the western United States. In 1915, the Gering Courier moved into a new building. This building is now a special historical place. In 1927, the Gering Courier joined with another local paper called the Gering Midwest.
Asa Wood was in charge of the newspaper for over 50 years. He was the publisher and editor. He was also the president of the Nebraska Press Association for a time. Besides newspapers, he raised cattle and was a state senator from 1924 to 1930. Like many newspaper owners back then, he was also the local postmaster. People said he knew everything about western Nebraska history. He was one of the most famous newspaper people in the state. When he passed away in 1945, his son, Warren Wood, took over the paper.
Under Warren Wood, the newspaper grew even more. In 1955, it bought the Banner News from Banner County. After Warren Wood died in 1978, his daughter Carol became the publisher. Her husband, Jack Lewis, helped manage the newspaper every day.
New Owners for the Courier
In April 1999, Carol and Jack Lewis sold the Gering Courier. It was bought by a company called Excellence in Publishing, Inc. This company also owned another newspaper nearby. Then, in February 2000, the Courier was sold again. This time, the Omaha World-Herald Company bought it.
The Gering Courier became part of a larger group of newspapers. This group was owned by a company called Berkshire Hathaway. Later, in 2018, another company called Lee Enterprises started managing the Courier. In January 2020, Lee Enterprises bought all of Berkshire Hathaway's newspapers. Today, the Gering Courier works with two other newspapers, the Star-Herald and the Hemingford Ledger. All three are owned by Lee Enterprises.
Awards and Recognition
The Gering Courier has won many top awards. These awards come from the Nebraska Press Association's Better Newspapers contest. For example, it won the Loral Johnson award in 2006.
