A Look Back: Germantown's History
Germantown has an interesting past. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, it was the county seat for Hyde County. This means it was the main center for the county's government and important meetings.
The area was first named Germain Town. It was named after an English colonist called Bernard Germain. Later, in the late 1800s, the name changed to Germantown. This change happened when the timber industry came from Pennsylvania. They wanted to make German American and Mennonite workers feel more at home. These workers were brought south to cut down cypress trees and clear the swamps.
What is Germantown Like Today?
Today, Germantown is very small. As of January 2021, only one person lives there permanently. It is more like the remains of a neighborhood than a busy village. It's just a coincidence that the current resident happens to be of German American descent.
