Germán Alejo Pezzella, born on June 27, 1991, is a professional footballer from Argentina. He plays as a centre-back, which is a defensive position, for River Plate in Argentina. He also plays for the Argentina national team. A big highlight of his career was winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina.

Club Career Highlights

Germán Pezzella has played for several important football clubs. He started his journey in Argentina and then moved to play in Europe.

Starting at River Plate

Pezzella began his professional career at River Plate, one of Argentina's biggest clubs. He first played for the senior team on December 7, 2011. This was in a match for the Copa Argentina, where his team won 1–0.

His first league game was on March 2, 2012. He played the whole game, which ended in a 0–0 draw. Pezzella scored his first goal as a professional player on September 2, 2012. It was an important goal that helped his team get a 1–1 draw.

He also scored a goal in a very famous match called the Superclásico against Boca Juniors. This goal helped River Plate draw 1–1. On December 10, 2014, Pezzella scored a goal in the 2014 Copa Sudamericana final. River Plate won this match 2–0, which was their first international title in 17 years!

Playing in Europe

In 2015, Pezzella moved to Spain to play for Real Betis. This club had just been promoted to La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. He played his first game for Betis on August 23, 2015.

Later, in 2017, he went to Italy to play for Fiorentina on loan. After a good season, Fiorentina signed him permanently in 2018. He even became the captain of Fiorentina for the 2018–19 season. In 2021, Pezzella returned to Real Betis.

Back to River Plate

After nine years playing in Europe, Germán Pezzella returned to his home club, River Plate, on August 5, 2024.

International Career Highlights

Pezzella has also had a successful career playing for his country, Argentina.

Youth Teams

He played for Argentina's youth teams, including the Under-20 and Under-23 squads. He was part of the team that played in the 2011 Pan American Games.

Senior National Team

In October 2017, Pezzella was first called up to play for the Argentina national team. He made his debut on November 11, 2017, in a friendly match against Russia.

In May 2018, he was part of Argentina's bigger squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. However, he did not make it into the final team of 23 players. On March 27, 2019, Pezzella was the captain for Argentina in a friendly match against Morocco.

A huge moment in his career was being part of Argentina's team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He came on as a substitute in the final match. Argentina won the World Cup by beating France in a penalty shootout, earning their third world title!

In June 2024, Pezzella was also included in Argentina's squad for the 2024 Copa América, which Argentina won.
