Gernot Roll (born April 9, 1939 – died November 12, 2020) was a famous German cinematographer, film director, and script writer. A cinematographer is the person in charge of the camera and lighting on a film set. They make sure the movie looks great!
Gernot Roll worked on many films with well-known directors like Edgar Reitz and Sönke Wortmann. He was especially good at turning books into movies and making films about real people's lives. For example, he filmed The Buddenbrooks twice. This was a story based on a famous novel by Thomas Mann.

Early Life and Career
Gernot Roll was born in Dresden, Germany, and grew up in a town called Pirna. When he was just 14 years old, he started learning how to be a cameraman. He then worked at the DEFA Studios in Berlin-Babelsberg. His very first job as a camera assistant was on a fairy tale movie called The Singing Ringing Tree.
In 1960, he moved to West Germany and began working at Bavaria Film in Munich. He helped film many literary works, which are movies based on books. He also worked on popular TV shows like Graf Yoster gibt sich die Ehre and Tatort. From 1976, he became a freelance cinematographer, meaning he worked for himself.
Famous Film Projects
Gernot Roll became very well-known for his work on the long TV series Heimat – Eine deutsche Chronik in 1984. This series was directed by Edgar Reitz and was 16 hours long!
He also worked on other important films, such as Caroline Link's Jenseits der Stille (Beyond Silence) and Helmut Dietl's Rossini. He teamed up with Sönke Wortmann for Der bewegte Mann and with Caroline Link again for Nirgendwo in Afrika (Nowhere in Africa). This film even won an Oscar! He also worked with many other talented directors.
Directing Films
Gernot Roll didn't just work behind the camera; he also directed movies! His first film as a director was Radetzkymarsch in 1994.
He directed several films, including the popular children's movie Der Räuber Hotzenplotz (The Robber Hotzenplotz) in 2006. In 2008, he went back to being a cinematographer for Heinrich Breloer's film Die Buddenbrooks.
Later Life and Legacy
In 2003, Gernot Roll was one of the people who helped start the Deutsche Filmakademie (German Film Academy). This is an important group for filmmakers in Germany.
He was married to a film producer named Rita Serra-Roll. Their son, Michael Roll, is an actor. Gernot Roll passed away on November 12, 2020, in Munich, at the age of 81, after being ill.
