Gertrude Hartland was born in County Cork, a lovely place in Ireland. Her parents were Richard Hartland and Mary Walsh. Art and plants ran in her family! Her uncle, Henry Albert Hartland, was also an artist. Another uncle, William Baylor Hartland, was a famous plantsman. A plantsman is someone who studies and grows plants, especially new types.

Her Artistic Work

Gertrude loved to paint flowers. She was especially good at painting daffodils. Her uncle, William Baylor Hartland, was a specialist in daffodils. He created many books and catalogs about these flowers in the 1880s and 1890s.

Illustrating Daffodils

Gertrude's beautiful flower drawings were used to illustrate her uncle's books. Her pictures were engraved, which means they were carved onto a surface to make prints. This helped share her art with many people. One famous book was called Little Book of Daffodils. Her drawings for this book were engraved by W.J. Welch.

Gertrude Hartland later married a man named Stephen Jackson. She passed away in 1954.
