Get Water! is a fun mobile game that teaches players about a big problem: not having enough clean water in places like India and other parts of South Asia. It also shows how this problem can stop girls from going to school. A company called Decode Global Studio, based in Montreal, made this game. Their goal was to create a game that was both educational and super fun to play. The game first came out for iOS devices on March 22, 2013, which is World Water Day. It was then released for Android phones a year later, also on World Water Day in 2014.
Maya's Story: Getting Water for School
The game's story is about a girl named Maya. She really loves going to school and learning new things. But there's a problem: the water pump in her village is broken. This means Maya often has to leave school to go find and collect water for her family. The faster Maya can collect the water, the sooner she can get back to her classes and learn more! As you play, Maya gets help from her mom and other people in the village. They all want to make it easier for her to get water and help her continue her education.
How to Play Get Water!
Get Water! is a type of game called an "endless runner" with a story. In these games, your character keeps moving forward, and you help them avoid obstacles and collect items. In this game, you help Maya collect water and other special items. You also need to help her avoid enemies. To control Maya, you draw a line on the screen. Maya will then surf along this line!
Besides guiding Maya, you can tap the screen to make her throw a boomerang. This helps her fight off enemies who try to break her water pot. As you collect more water, you unlock new parts of Maya's story. These are shown as cool still-image videos. Maya also learns new skills. These skills help her collect water faster and protect it better from dangers.
Learning About Water
This game is a great way to learn! The story shows how not having enough clean water affects girls' education, especially in villages and crowded areas of India. After each time you play, the game gives you extra facts. You can learn about water scarcity, how water is used today, and simple ways to save water in your daily life.
There's even more! If you're a teacher, or just want to learn more, there's a special six-part lesson plan. It's made for teachers of grades 4-6. You can download it for free as a PDF from the game's official website.
