The History of Ghent

The community of Ghent has a long history. As far back as 1815, there were already several mills in the village. These mills used the power of Yellow Creek to operate. By 1818, several families had decided to settle and live in Ghent.

A post office was opened in Ghent in 1858. It helped people send and receive letters and packages for many years. The post office stayed open until 1918. The name of the community, Ghent, most likely celebrates the Treaty of Ghent. This important treaty helped end the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain.
