Interstate 77 (I-77) is a major highway in the eastern United States. It is part of the Interstate Highway System, a network of important roads across the country. I-77 stretches from Columbia, South Carolina, all the way north to Cleveland, Ohio.
This highway is about 610.10 miles (981.86 km) long. It passes through many different types of land. You'll see tall mountains in West Virginia and wide, flat farmlands in North Carolina and Ohio. I-77 has become the main north-south road through the middle Appalachian Mountains. It largely takes the place of the older U.S. Route 21.
I-77 starts in Columbia, South Carolina, where it connects with Interstate 26. It ends in Cleveland, Ohio, at its connection with Interstate 90.
Special Features of I-77
East River Mountain Tunnel
One interesting part of I-77 is the East River Mountain Tunnel. This tunnel connects the states of Virginia and West Virginia. It's special because it's one of only two road tunnels in the entire United States that crosses a state line through a mountain. The other one is the Cumberland Gap Tunnel, which connects Tennessee and Kentucky.
