Gholson, once known as Meander, is a small community in Noxubee County, Mississippi. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it's not a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's a group of homes and buildings. You can find Gholson southwest of Shuqualak.

Gholson's Past

In the year 1900, Gholson was a very small place. Only 58 people lived there. The community also had two churches.

A post office served the people of Gholson for many years. It first opened in 1838. The post office helped people send and receive mail until it closed in 1976.

The Summerville Institute

Gholson was once home to an important school called the Summerville Institute. Thomas S. Gathright started this school in 1854.

During the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, this school was very special. It was the only secondary school in Mississippi that was still working. This meant it was a rare place where students could continue their education during the war.

In 1869, a fire damaged the school building. But the community worked to rebuild it. The Summerville Institute kept teaching students for a few more years. Sadly, in 1875, another fire completely destroyed the school. After that, it was not rebuilt again.
