Shuqualak, which sounds like "sugar lock", is a small town in Noxubee County, Mississippi, United States. In 2020, about 399 people lived there. This number is a bit lower than the 501 people who lived there in 2010. Several places in Shuqualak, including parts of its main street area, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places because they are important historical sites.

History of Shuqualak
Shuqualak got its first post office in 1855. A few years later, in 1859, it officially became a town. It was an important stop on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, a train line built in the 1850s. The name Shuqualak comes from the Choctaw language, and people say it means "beads."
Geography and Location
Shuqualak is located on U.S. Route 45. This highway runs right through the town. It is about halfway between the cities of Columbus and Meridian.
South of Shuqualak, there is a special landing field called Gunshy. It is used by Columbus Air Force Base for extra training and flights.

The Shuqualak Lumber Company started in 1948. It provides jobs for about 150 people. This company is one of the biggest privately owned businesses that makes southern yellow pine wood in the southeastern United States.

Students in Shuqualak attend schools that are part of the Noxubee County School District. There used to be a school called the Shuqualak Female College in town. It was a special school for girls that opened in 1880, but it is no longer open.
