Behind the Scenes: How the Book Was Made
Writing the Story
The author, Michelle Paver, shared her thoughts on writing Ghost Hunter. On December 18, 2008, she wrote on her official website: "I'm working very hard on the sixth and final book in the series, Ghost Hunter. I'm happy to say that it's going really well."
She also mentioned how strange it felt to write the last book. She knew she would miss Torak, Renn, and Wolf a lot. However, she was also proud to bring Torak's story to a dramatic and satisfying end.
Paver also confirmed in her official podcast that Eostra, the Soul Eater, would be a main character. She even said that writing about Eostra gave her bad dreams. But she thought this was a good sign for the story!
Designing the Cover
Michelle Paver talked about the book's cover design. She spoke with John Fordham, who creates the covers. She told him the main ideas of the story so he could start thinking about the artwork.
Because of the book's themes, the cover was likely to be purplish. Wolf and Torak might also be shown clearly. Paver sent John a picture of an amazing Stone Age cave painting of an eagle owl. It was thousands of years old, but looked like Eostra could have made it yesterday. She found it very spooky and wondered what designs it would inspire.
Setting the Scene: Inspiration for the World
Michelle Paver shared on her official website that she traveled into the mountains. She did this to get ideas and inspiration for the book's setting. She also hoped to see some eagle owls up close. This was a hint that the powerful Eostra would be a big part of the story.
