Story Summary
This book continues the journey of Torak, a young boy with a special connection to animals. He is joined by his friends Renn and Bale. They are searching for a piece of a powerful object called the fire opal. They believe it is hidden on the Seal Islands.
The Search for the Opal
While on the islands, Bale asks Torak for his blessing to be with Renn. Torak gets upset and leaves. Sadly, Bale is then killed by Thiazzi, a powerful and evil mage known as the Oak Mage. Thiazzi finds the fire opal fragment and takes it.
Journey into the Deep Forest
Torak feels terrible for leaving Bale alone. He promises to get revenge for Bale's death. Torak, Renn, his wolf companion, and Fin-Kedinn travel into the Deep Forest. This is Thiazzi's home. In this forest, two clans, the Forest Horse and Auroch Clans, are fighting each other.
Fin-Kedinn gets hurt and has to go back. Torak and Renn soon find out that Thiazzi is tricking the Deep Forest clans. He is pretending to be their mages to control them.
Separation and Danger
A big forest fire starts, and Torak and Renn get separated. Torak eventually finds his way to Thiazzi. Meanwhile, Renn is captured by a Deep Forest clan. They don't believe a woman can have a strong bond with animals like she does with Wolf and her ravens, Rip and Rek.
Thiazzi kidnaps Renn and traps her inside a huge, hollow tree. She manages to cut herself free just in time to avoid choking on smoke. She climbs to the top of the tree, where she sees Torak fighting Thiazzi.
The Final Battle
Renn throws a burning piece of wood to Torak. A burning ember from it sets Thiazzi's hair on fire. As he falls to his death, Eostra's eagle owl snatches the fire opal from him.
As Torak prepares to leave the Deep Forest, Durrain, the leader of the Red Deer Clan, tells him something important. He reveals that when Torak was born, a prophecy said he would defeat the evil Soul Eaters. The prophecy also said he would be a spirit walker, but would be called clanless, and his mother would die.
Torak and Renn then return to the open forest. A few days later, Wolf and his mate Darkfur show Torak and Renn their new wolf cubs. Torak knows he must now get ready for a big fight against Eostra, the Eagle Owl Mage. She is the last and most powerful of the Soul Eaters.
