Michelle Paver (born 7 September 1960) is a British writer. She is famous for her children's books, especially the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. This series is set in prehistoric Europe and began with Wolf Brother in 2004. Her books have sold over 2.5 million copies and have been translated into 30 different languages.

Michelle Paver was born in Nyasaland (which is now called Malawi). She moved to England when she was very young. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a lawyer. She has also written another children's series called Gods and Warriors, as well as novels for adults.

Early Life and Education

Michelle Paver was born on 7 September 1960. Her birthplace was Blantyre, Nyasaland, which is now part of Malawi. Her mother was Belgian and her father was South African. Her father managed a newspaper called the Nyasaland Times.

In 1963, when Michelle was a young child, her family moved to Wimbledon, England. She went to Wimbledon High School. Later, she studied biochemistry at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford university. She earned a top degree there. After university, she became a solicitor, which is a type of lawyer. She worked at a law firm in City of London for five years and became a partner.

In 1996, Michelle Paver's father passed away. This led her to take a year off from her job. During this time, she traveled around France and America. She also wrote the first version of her book, Without Charity. Soon after returning, she left her law career to focus completely on writing.

Her Writing Journey

Standalone Novels

Michelle Paver started her writing career in 2000. Her first adult historical novel was Without Charity. This was followed by A Place in the Hills the next year.

She has also written several standalone ghost stories. These include Dark Matter (2010), which is a scary story set in the Arctic. It was nominated for an award called the Shirley Jackson Award. Other books are Thin Air (2016), a horror story set in the Himalayas, and Wakenhyrst (2019), a gothic thriller. Her next book, Rainforest, is expected in 2025.

Daughters of Eden Series

Michelle Paver also wrote a series for adults called Daughters of Eden. This trilogy was published between 2002 and 2005. The books are The Shadow Catcher, Fever Hill, and The Serpent's Tooth.

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Series

In 2004, Michelle Paver published Wolf Brother. This was the first book in her Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. It was also her first book written for children. This series has been very popular. It has sold over 2.5 million copies and is available in 30 languages.

The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series is set in prehistoric Northern Europe. It includes nine novels published from 2004 to 2022. The stories follow a 12-year-old boy named Torak. He is joined by his friends, Renn and Wolf. The main goal of the series is Torak's mission to defeat the Soul Eaters. These are evil clan mages who want to destroy all life in the forest. For the sixth book in the series, Ghost Hunter (2009), she won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. This is a special book award judged by British children's writers.

Gods and Warriors Series

Michelle Paver's second children's series is called Gods and Warriors. It is set during the Bronze Age. The story is about Hylas, a 12-year-old goatherd. His adventures take him to places like Ancient Crete and Ancient Egypt. Another main character is Pirra, who is the daughter of a high priestess. She has a crescent-shaped scar on her cheek.

Animals are very important in this series. A dolphin appears from the first book. A lion is featured from the second book onwards. A falcon joins the story from the third book.
