Michelle Paver (born 7 September 1960) is a British writer. She is famous for her children's historical fantasy books, especially the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. This series is set in prehistoric Europe and began with Wolf Brother in 2004. Her books have sold over 2.5 million copies and have been translated into 30 languages.

Michelle Paver was born in Nyasaland (which is now Malawi). She moved to England when she was very young. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a lawyer. She has also written another children's series called Gods and Warriors. For adults, she wrote the Daughters of Eden trilogy and several other novels.

Early Life and Education

Michelle Paver was born on September 7, 1960, in Blantyre, Nyasaland (now Malawi). Her mother was Belgian, and her father was South African. Her father managed a newspaper called the Nyasaland Times. In 1963, her family moved to Wimbledon, England.

She went to Wimbledon High School. Later, she studied biochemistry at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford and earned a top degree. After college, she became a solicitor (a type of lawyer). She worked at a law firm in City of London for five years and became a partner there.

Becoming a Writer

In 1996, Michelle Paver's father passed away. This led her to take a year off from her law job. During this time, she traveled in France and America. She also wrote the first version of her book, Without Charity. Soon after returning, she left her law career to focus completely on writing.

Michelle Paver's Books

Standalone Novels

Michelle Paver published her first adult historical novel, Without Charity, in 2000. This was followed by A Place in the Hills in 2001.

She has also written ghost stories. These include Dark Matter (2010), a scary story set in the Arctic. It was nominated for an award called the Shirley Jackson Award. Other standalone books are Thin Air (2016), which is about mountaineering and spooky events in the Himalayas, and Wakenhyrst (2019), a gothic thriller set in the Fens. Her book, Rainforest, which is connected to Dark Matter and Thin Air, was published in 2025.

Daughters of Eden Trilogy

Paver's Daughters of Eden series for adults was published between 2002 and 2005. It includes three books:

  • Fever Hill (2004)
  • The Serpent's Tooth (2005)

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Series

In 2004, Michelle Paver published Wolf Brother. This was the first book in her Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series and her first book for children. This series has sold over 2.5 million copies and has been translated into 30 languages.

The series is set in ancient Northern Europe. It has nine novels that were published from 2004 to 2022. The stories follow Torak, a twelve-year-old boy who doesn't belong to a clan. His friends, Renn and Wolf, join him on adventures. The main goal of the series is Torak's mission to defeat the Soul Eaters. These are evil clan mages who want to destroy all life in the forest where Torak lives. For the sixth book in the series, Ghost Hunter (2009), she won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. This award is judged by British children's writers.

Gods and Warriors Series

Michelle Paver's second children's series is Gods and Warriors. It is set during the Bronze Age. The stories are about Hylas, a 12-year-old goatherd. His adventures take him to Ancient Crete and Ancient Egypt. Another main character is Pirra, who is the daughter of a high priestess and has a crescent-shaped scar on her cheek. Animals are very important in these stories, including a lion, a falcon, and a dolphin.
