The Story of Spirit Walker
Six months have passed since the events of Wolf Brother. Torak is now living with the Raven Clan. One day, a member of the clan becomes very sick. He acts strangely and puts himself and his young nephew in danger. The clan's leader, Fin-Kedinn, stops him. Torak thinks that this sickness was caused by a group of evil mages. These mages are known as the Soul-Eaters.
Torak soon realizes that a small, strange creature is following him. It seems to be trying to hurt him. As the sickness spreads through the Forest, Torak secretly leaves the camp. He sets out on his own to find a cure. Meanwhile, Wolf, Torak's loyal companion, is now living with a wolf pack. Wolf feels restless and worried. He decides to go find Torak.
Renn's Discovery and New Friends
Renn, Torak's friend, has also seen the strange creature at the Raven Camp. The clan's mage, Sauenn, explains what it is. She says it is a tokoroth. A tokoroth is a young child who has a demon soul trapped inside them by a Soul-Eater. Renn also sneaks away from the camp to find Torak. She and Wolf meet each other on their journey.
Torak meets three boys from the Seal Clan: Bale, Detlan, and Asrif. They fight, and Torak is eventually captured. The boys take him to their islands for judgment. They believe he has brought bad luck to their sea from the Forest. Renn and Wolf meet some members of the Sea Eagle Clan. These new friends take them both to the Seal Islands. There, they learn that something forbidden has happened: an orca (a large whale) has been killed.
Finding a Cure and a Shocking Truth
When Torak tells the Seals about the sickness, he learns something important. The same sickness visited their islands two years ago. Their mage, Tenris, promises that he can make a cure. Torak quickly realizes that the tokoroth has followed him to the island. Wolf and Renn rescue him from one of its traps.
Torak goes with Bale, Detlan, and Asrif to find a special plant for the cure. He risks his life for them, which earns their respect. While underwater, Torak feels a strange change. For a few moments, he feels like he is a seal. He also senses an angry orca coming closer. Then, he returns to his own body. The boys rush into the water to save Torak. An orca attacks Detlan, causing him a serious injury. Tenris later explains that Torak must be a Spirit Walker. This is a rare human ability to move one's soul into another living creature.
Renn soon realizes that Tenris was the one who killed the orca. She also figures out that he is the Soul-Eater. However, Tenris tricks Bale and Torak. He makes them think that Renn is sick and that her ideas are crazy. Tenris then overpowers Torak with the help of his tokoroths. He admits that he is a Soul-Eater. He also confesses to killing the orca. Tenris also reveals that he created the demon bear that killed Torak's father. He sent the sickness to the Forest to find the powerful person who defeated the bear. Tenris then reveals that he is Torak's father's brother. He prepares to take Torak's power for himself.
The Final Battle and a New Mission
Renn convinces Bale to help them. Together with Wolf, they manage to free Torak. Tenris is then killed by an orca seeking revenge. But before he dies, Tenris tells Torak that Fin-Kedinn knows more about his father. Torak, Renn, and Wolf say goodbye to Bale. Knowing the secret of the sickness, they return to the Forest.
Fin-Kedinn then tells Torak the truth. Torak's father, like Tenris, was once a Soul-Eater. But he turned against them when they became evil. Fin-Kedinn tells Torak that he, with his Spirit Walking ability, has the power to defeat the Soul-Eaters. Torak promises to do just that.
