Playing for Clubs
Giacomo Losi was born in Soncino, a town in Cremona. He started his football journey with his hometown club, Soncino. In 1951, he moved to U.S. Cremonese.
In 1955, Losi joined A.S. Roma. He played his first game for Roma on March 20 against Inter Milan. Losi was a full-back. He was known for his strength and fair play. Even though he was not very tall (only 1.69 meters), he was excellent at heading the ball. Because of this skill, he often played as a sweeper.
Losi earned his famous nickname, "Core de Roma", on January 8, 1961. This happened during a match against Sampdoria. Losi got injured during the game. But there were no more player substitutions allowed. So, he kept playing even though he was hurt. He then scored the winning goal from a corner kick. Roma fans saw this and understood that even if he wasn't from Rome, he showed how much people from Rome love their team.
Playing for Italy
Losi played his first game for the Italian national team on March 13, 1960. It was a friendly match against Spain. He was chosen to be part of the Italian squad for the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile. He played in two of Italy's three matches at the World Cup. Overall, he played 11 games for the Italian national team.
Life After Playing
After he stopped playing football, Giacomo Losi continued to live in Rome. He became the director of a football team called "Valle Aurelia '87". He is also one of the eleven members in the Hall of Fame for A.S. Roma. Losi passed away on February 4, 2024, when he was 88 years old.
Beyond Football
On July 3, 1968, Losi helped start the Italian Footballers' Association (AIC). This group was founded in Milan. He worked with other famous footballers like Giacomo Bulgarelli, Sandro Mazzola, and Gianni Rivera. This association helps support football players in Italy.
