About Giacomo Zanella
Early Life and Education
Giacomo Zanella was born in a town called Chiampo, close to Vicenza, Italy. He studied to become a priest from a young age. After he became a priest, he started teaching at a school in his hometown.
Challenges and Teaching Career
Zanella loved his country, Italy. At that time, parts of Italy were controlled by Austria. His strong feelings for Italy made the Austrian leaders unhappy. Even though his local church leader tried to protect him, he had to stop teaching in 1853.
Later, when the Veneto region became free from Austrian rule, the Italian government gave him a new job. He became a professor at the University of Padua. He became well-known as a poet when his first book of poems was published in 1868.
Later Life and Recovery
In 1872, Zanella's mother passed away. This made him very sad and caused him to become ill for a while. He had to leave his teaching job because of this.
After he got better, he built a lovely house near the Astichello river, which was close to where he grew up. He lived there peacefully until he died in 1888.

Giacomo Zanella wrote many different kinds of poems. His poetry is known for being elegant and well-crafted.
Nature and Deep Thoughts
His last book of poems included beautiful sonnets, which are short poems, about the Astichello river. These poems are similar to those written by the English poet William Wordsworth about a river called the Duddon.
He also wrote a long poem called "Il Pettirosso" (which means "The Redbreast"). This poem is like some works by another English poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Zanella wrote powerful odes, which are poems that praise someone or something. He wrote a very dignified ode about the famous Italian writer Dante. He also wrote an ode about the opening of the Suez Canal, a very important waterway.
