Gianna Maria Canale was born in 1927 in a city called Reggio Calabria in Italy. When she was 20 years old, in 1947, she joined the Miss Italia beauty contest. She came in second place, right after Lucia Bosè.
After the contest, Gianna Maria became very popular. She appeared in many Italian magazines. People often said she looked a lot like the famous American actress Ava Gardner.
Starting Her Acting Career
A movie director named Riccardo Freda noticed Gianna Maria. He offered her a role in one of his movies. They soon fell in love and got married.
Gianna Maria and Riccardo moved to Brazil for a short time. They worked on two movies together there. But Gianna Maria did not enjoy living in South America very much.
