Trillium kurabayashii, also known as the giant purple wakerobin, is a beautiful flowering plant. You can find it growing naturally in parts of the United States, specifically in southwestern Oregon and northern California.
What is the Giant Purple Wakerobin?
The giant purple wakerobin is a type of plant that comes back year after year. It doesn't have a woody stem like a tree or a bush. Instead, it has soft, green stems. This plant spreads underground using special stems called rhizomes. These rhizomes help new plants grow nearby.
How Does it Grow?
The stems of the giant purple wakerobin can grow quite tall, up to about 55 centimeters (about 22 inches). Its flowers are usually a lovely purple or dark red color. Sometimes, you might even find a yellow version of this flower that doesn't have any purple color at all. When the flowers are fresh, they often have a unique, spicy smell.
Different Kinds of Wakerobins
Scientists sometimes have different ideas about how to classify plants. Some experts think that Trillium kurabayashii is actually the same plant as another one called Trillium angustipetalum. However, a scientist named J. D. Freeman studied these plants closely. He noticed that Trillium kurabayashii has much wider petals than Trillium angustipetalum. Because of this difference, Freeman believed they were two separate species.
