Gideon Ouseley (born February 24, 1762 – died May 13, 1839) was an important Irish preacher. He was born into a well-known family in Dunmore, County Galway. His family followed the Anglican church.

Gideon Ouseley's Life Story

Gideon's father wanted him to become a church leader. But Gideon spent much of his childhood visiting his neighbors. He learned alongside his cousins, Gore and William. All three of them had very successful careers later on.

Gideon got married when he was 20 years old. For a while, he lived a wild life. He spent all of his and his wife's money. One day, he was in a fight and lost an eye. This event changed his life. After that, Gideon decided to leave his wild ways behind.

In 1791, he learned about Methodism from English soldiers. These soldiers were staying in Dunmore. Gideon then decided to help others change their lives too. He traveled around, mostly in Ulster, sharing his message. He often gave up to 20 sermons each week!

Gideon knew the Irish language very well. He also understood the ways of the local people. He became famous for his unique preaching style. He would often preach while riding a white horse. Because of his efforts, many called him Methodism's 'apostle to the Irish'. He continued his work until he passed away.
