Gilbert Kennedy, 2nd Earl of Cassilis facts for kids
Gilbert Kennedy, 2nd Earl of Cassillis was an important Scottish leader. He lived a long time ago, in the 1500s. He was the son of David Kennedy, 1st Earl of Cassilis. Gilbert Kennedy became the Earl of Cassillis after his father.
In August 1524, Gilbert Kennedy went on an important trip to England. He was sent by Margaret Tudor, who was the mother of the Scottish king, James V. Gilbert Kennedy's job was to talk about making peace between Scotland and England. He also discussed a possible marriage for King James V with Princess Mary of England. This was a big responsibility for him.
Sadly, Gilbert Kennedy lost his life in August 1527. He was in Prestwick when he was attacked by people who followed Hew Campbell of Loudon. This happened because of a disagreement over land near Turnberry.
Family Life
Gilbert Kennedy was married to Lady Isabel Campbell. Her father was Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll. Gilbert and Isabel had several children.
Their children included:
- Janet Kennedy (who passed away in 1566)
- David Kennedy of Culzean
- Gilbert Kennedy, 3rd Earl of Cassilis (who was born in 1515 and passed away in 1558)
