History of Gilbertville
Gilbertville was officially planned and marked out in 1856. This means its streets and lots were laid out for people to build homes and businesses.
Geography and Weather
Gilbertville is located at 42°25′2″N 92°12′50″W / 42.41722°N 92.21389°W. The city covers a total area of about 0.40 square miles (0.93 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
Tornado Activity in the Area
The Gilbertville area experiences more tornadoes than the average for the state of Iowa. It has about 206% more tornado activity than the overall U.S. average.
- On May 15, 1968, a very strong F5 tornado hit about 22.7 miles from Gilbertville. An F5 tornado has wind speeds between 261 and 318 miles per hour. This tornado caused 5 deaths and injured 156 people. It also caused a lot of damage, estimated between $5 million and $50 million.
- On August 26, 1965, an F4 tornado struck about 8.1 miles from the city center. An F4 tornado has wind speeds between 207 and 260 miles per hour. This storm killed one person and injured 17 others. It caused damages between $500,000 and $5 million.
