Discovering Gilda: Her Life and Music
Gilda's Musical Journey
Gilda chose her stage name from a movie character. This character was a strong, charming woman played by Rita Hayworth in the film Gilda.
Gilda first got involved in music by helping with festivals at a Catholic school. She met a musician and agent named Juan Carlos "Toti" Giménez. Gilda then became a backup singer for a band called La Barra. Soon after, she joined another band called Crema Americana.
In 1993, Giménez encouraged her to start singing on her own. She recorded her first solo album, De corazón a corazón (meaning "From heart to heart"). This album was released after she signed with a local music company called Magenta.
The next year, in 1994, she released La única ("The one and only"). This album included popular songs like Corazón herido ("Heart broken") and La puerta ("The door"). In 1995, Gilda released Pasito a pasito ("Step by step"). This album featured one of her most famous songs, No me arrepiento de este amor ("I don't regret this love").
A Sad Farewell: Gilda's Passing
On September 7, 1996, Gilda was on a tour to promote her newest album. This album was called Corazón valiente ("Brave heart") and was very successful. Sadly, Gilda died in a tragic accident during this tour.
The accident happened on National Route 12 in Argentina. A truck crossed the highway and hit her tour bus. Gilda, her mother, her daughter, three of her musicians, and the bus driver all passed away.
Gilda's Lasting Legacy
After her death, many fans believed Gilda could perform miracles. Some even called her a saint. On her birthday, fans visit the accident site. They leave blue candles, flowers, gifts, and other special items there. This place has become a shrine for her fans.
When she died, Gilda was working on a new album. She had only recorded five songs for it. These songs were later released in 1997 on a special album called No es mi despedida ("Not my farewell"). This album included another one of her popular songs, "Se me ha perdido un corazón". It also had two live songs and some songs by other singers.
Another album of unreleased songs and demo recordings came out in 1999. It was called "Las alas del alma". Some of Gilda's most well-known songs are Fuiste ("You were"), No me arrepiento de este amor, and No es mi despedida. After her death, other artists re-recorded some of her songs. A famous rock band, Attaque 77, made their own version of No me arrepiento de este amor.
