Giles Stibbert's Military Journey
Early Days in India
Giles Stibbert first arrived in India in 1756. He quickly joined an important battle called the Battle of Plassey in 1757. This battle was a big moment for the British in India.
He later formed his own group of soldiers in 1761. He led them during a siege (a military blockade) in Patna in 1763, where he was injured. Stibbert also led a part of the army in the Battle of Buxar in 1764. The next year, he successfully captured a place called Chunar.
Leading the Army
Giles Stibbert was chosen to be the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in India two times. His first term was from 1777 to 1779. He returned to this top role in 1783 after Sir Eyre Coote passed away, serving until 1785.
During his time in India, Stibbert became very wealthy. When he returned to England, he lived in Hereford Street with his wife and three children. He then hired an architect named John Crunden to build his country home, Portswood House, in Portswood, Hampshire, in 1778.
His Legacy
Giles Stibbert's grandson, Frederick Stibbert, used the family's wealth to create the famous Stibbert Museum in Florence. Frederick turned the family home into a museum to display his amazing collection of art and historical items.
Giles Stibbert is buried in South Stoneham in Hampshire. A special monument created by the sculptor John Bacon marks his resting place.
His Family
Giles Stibbert was married to Sophronia Rebecca Wright.
