Gilligan's Planet is a fun American Saturday morning cartoon series. It was made by Filmation and MGM/UA Television. The show first aired in the 1982–1983 season on CBS.
This cartoon was a spin-off of the popular TV show Gilligan's Island. It was actually the second cartoon based on Gilligan's Island. The first one was called The New Adventures of Gilligan.
Gilligan's Planet was the last cartoon Filmation made for Saturday mornings. After this, they started making cartoons just for other TV stations. This show was also special because it was the first Filmation series to feature a credit for Lou Scheimer. Plus, it was one of the last cartoons in the 1980s to use a laugh track.
Most of the original actors from Gilligan's Island returned to voice their characters. However, Tina Louise, who played Ginger Grant, chose not to be in any Gilligan's Island spin-offs. So, another actress, Dawn Wells, voiced Ginger. Dawn Wells also voiced her own character, Mary Ann Summers.
What is Gilligan's Planet About?
Gilligan's Planet starts with a big change for the castaways. The smart Professor finally builds a working spaceship! This means the group can finally leave the island where they were stranded.
But, true to their usual bad luck, they don't make it home. Instead, they fly off into space and crash-land on a new, unknown planet. This planet can support human life, but it looks very different. It has strange colors and lots of craters.
The rocket gets badly damaged in the crash. So, the castaways are still stuck, but now they are on a different planet! The Professor has to start all over again, trying to fix their only way home.
The show is a lot like the original Gilligan's Island, but with a space twist. Instead of meeting headhunters or other shipwrecked people, they meet different alien creatures. A new character named Bumper joins the group. Bumper is a friendly reptilian alien who becomes Gilligan's pet and sidekick.
