Gillo Dorfles (born April 12, 1910 – died March 2, 2018) was a talented Italian art critic, painter, and philosopher. He was known for his ideas about art, culture, and how they connect with everyday life. Dorfles lived to be almost 108 years old.

Early Life and Studies

Gillo Dorfles was born in Trieste, Italy. He first studied medicine and became a specialist in psychiatry. Psychiatry is about understanding the human mind. This background helped him think deeply about art and culture.

Becoming an Art Expert

Later, Dorfles became a professor who taught about aesthetics. Aesthetics is the study of beauty and art. He taught at universities in Trieste, Milan, and Cagliari. He loved to explore how art affects people and society.

Starting New Art Movements

In 1948, Gillo Dorfles helped start a group called MAC. MAC stands for Movimento per l'arte concreta, which means "Movement for Concrete Art." This group focused on art that was abstract and didn't try to show real-life things. He worked with other artists like Bruno Munari.

Dorfles also showed his own paintings in Milan in 1949 and 1950. His art was part of many MAC exhibitions in the 1950s. In 1956, he helped create another important group. This was the ADI, or Associazione per il disegno industriale. It focused on industrial design, which is about making everyday objects look good and work well.

Ideas and Writings on Art

After a while, Dorfles stopped painting himself. He decided to focus on studying and writing about art. He explored how art changes over time. He also looked at the connection between art and industry. He studied what people liked and disliked in modern society.

Dorfles believed that understanding art means looking at all of culture. He thought art combines imagination, symbols, and even myths. One of his most famous books is Kitsch, published in 1968. This book talks about things that are considered bad taste but are still popular.

Later Exhibitions and Books

Even though he focused on writing, Dorfles still had art shows. His works were displayed in Milan in 1986. He also had exhibitions in Aosta in 1988 and Rome in 1996.

In 2010, when he turned 100, a special exhibition called L'avanguardia tradita was held in Milan. Another show, Dorfles. Kitsch – oggi il kitsch, took place in 2012. Dorfles himself helped organize this exhibition.

When he was 103, Dorfles published a new book of poems. These poems were written many years earlier, between 1941 and 1952. In 2013, he also helped design the Tibetan pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale. This is a very important art event.

His Final Years

Gillo Dorfles passed away in Milan on March 2, 2018. He died just six weeks before his 108th birthday. He left behind a rich legacy of art, ideas, and writings.
