Gino Mäder's Early Life and Cycling Start
Gino Mäder was born on January 4, 1997, in Flawil, Switzerland. He grew up in Wiedlisbach. His parents were also cyclists, and he was named Gino after a famous Italian cyclist, Gino Bartali.
Gino started playing football at age five. But he soon found his passion for cycling. Before becoming a professional road cyclist, he was a very skilled track cyclist. He even competed in the 2016 UEC European Track Championships.
In 2018, Gino showed his amazing talent. He won two stages in the Tour de l'Avenir and one stage in the Tour Alsace. He also won a stage in the Ronde de l'Isard in France. He finished fourth in a big race for young cyclists at the 2018 UCI World Championships. His teammate, Marc Hirschi, won that race. Gino believed their success came from great teamwork.
Gino Mäder's Professional Cycling Career
Gino Mäder became a full-time professional cyclist in 2019. He joined the UCI WorldTeam Team Dimension Data. In October 2020, he raced in the 2020 Vuelta a España, a very important race. He finished second in one of the last stages and placed 20th overall.
In early 2021, Gino joined the Bahrain Victorious team. He almost won stage 7 of the 2021 Paris–Nice race. He was caught right at the finish line by another rider. He was given an award for being the most combative (fighting) rider that day.
Winning a Stage in the Giro d'Italia
Later in 2021, Gino raced in the 2021 Giro d'Italia. He was helping his team leader, Mikel Landa. When Mikel got injured and had to leave the race, Gino stepped up. The very next day, Gino won stage 6 of the Giro! He dedicated his victory to Mikel. Sadly, Gino also had to leave the Giro later due to an arm injury.
Success at the Vuelta a España
Gino Mäder also rode in the 2021 Vuelta a España that year. After a tough start, he began to ride very strongly. He finished seventh on a mountain stage and kept improving. He helped his teammate, Jack Haig, a lot during the race.
In the final stages, Gino rode incredibly well. He moved into the top ten overall. On the second-to-last stage, he was part of a small group of elite riders who broke away. This helped him move into the top five overall. He also took the lead in the young rider classification, which is for the best young cyclist in the race. Gino kept his position on the last day. He finished the Vuelta in fifth place overall and won the young rider classification!
Gino Mäder's Charity Work
Gino Mäder was not just a great cyclist; he also cared about the environment. During the 2021 Vuelta a España, he decided to raise money for charity. He promised to donate 10 Euros for every rider he beat in the overall standings. He also added more money for every cyclist he beat at the end of each stage.
He ended up raising over 4,000 Euros! This money went to Just Diggit, an organization in Amsterdam. They work to regreen dry areas in Africa. In 2022, Gino promised to continue his charity work. He said he would donate 1 Euro for every rider he beat at each stage throughout the year.
Gino Mäder's Accident and Passing
On June 15, 2023, during stage 5 of the 2023 Tour de Suisse, Gino Mäder had a serious accident. He fell on a turn while riding downhill. Another cyclist, Magnus Sheffield, had fallen in almost the same spot earlier. Gino was found unconscious and was quickly taken to a hospital by helicopter.
Sadly, Gino Mäder passed away from his injuries the next day, at the age of 26. As a sign of respect, stage 6 of the Tour de Suisse was cancelled. Instead, riders took part in a special 20 km tribute ride.
Many teams and riders were deeply saddened. Gino's team, Bahrain Victorious, along with two other teams, left the Tour de Suisse. About 30 other riders also withdrew. Remco Evenepoel, who won stage 7, dedicated his victory to Gino Mäder.
