Giovanni Angelo Arcimboldi (born in 1485, died in 1555) was an important leader in the Catholic Church. He served as a Bishop in Novara and later as an Archbishop in Milan, both cities in Italy.
Life and Church Roles
Giovanni Angelo Arcimboldi was born in the city of Milan, Italy, on September 27, 1485.
Becoming a Bishop
In 1526, when Pope Clement VII was the head of the Catholic Church, Giovanni Angelo Arcimboldi was chosen to become the Bishop of Novara. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the church who oversees a specific area called a diocese.
On May 22, 1526, he was officially made a bishop. This special ceremony is called a consecration. It was performed by Antonio Maria Ciocchi del Monte, who was a very important church leader called a Cardinal-Bishop. Other bishops also helped in the ceremony.
Becoming an Archbishop
Later, in 1550, during the time of Pope Julius III, Giovanni Angelo Arcimboldi was given an even higher role. He became the Archbishop of Milan. An archbishop is like a chief bishop, in charge of a larger and more important area called an archdiocese.
He continued to serve as the Archbishop of Milan until he passed away on April 6, 1555.
