History of Girardot
Long ago, before Europeans arrived, the area of Girardot was home to a group of Native Americans called the Panches. We don't know much about where they came from.
The town started as a small village called "La Chivatera," which means "the goat farm." This was because many goats were raised there. This village was part of the Tocaima area. Old papers from 1840 called it "paso de Flandes" (Flanders' pass). The Magdalena River flows through this area towards the center of Colombia.
Because of its good location, the area grew steadily. Ramón Bueno and José Triana donated land, and the municipality was officially founded. It was named Girardot to honor General Atanasio Girardot. This was made official on October 9, 1852. The first mayor of the district was Claudio Clavijo. The first church was built in 1866.
The city grew in a grid pattern around San Miguel square. The San Miguel cathedral, with its regional style, is also located there.
The first hotel, called Cisneros Hotel, was built in 1884. It welcomed many travelers and merchants. Two years later, the port had 2,163 people. After a conflict called the Thousand Days' War, many people moved to Girardot from other parts of Colombia.
Geography of Girardot
Girardot is located on a flat area. It is surrounded by the foothills of the Eastern Mountain Range. There are no big hills or mountains within the city itself. However, some areas near the border with Nariño are mountainous and harder to reach.
