This stream gets its name from the Girty family. They were early settlers who lived in the area a long time ago. Some people believe it was named after John Girty. Others think it was named for Thomas Girty. Thomas was the brother of a well-known person named Simon Girty.

Girtys Run starts its journey in Allegheny County. It flows through different parts of the county. The stream eventually joins the much larger Allegheny River. This meeting point is in a town called Millvale.
