Club Football Journey
Giuliano Sarti is most remembered for his great success with two Italian clubs: Fiorentina and Internazionale. With these teams, he won many important trophies both in Italy and internationally.
Early Career and Fiorentina Success
Sarti started his football journey in smaller leagues. He played for Centese in 1952–53 and Bondenese in 1953–54. In 1954, he joined Fiorentina. He quickly became the team's main goalkeeper. Even with strong competition from other good goalkeepers, he kept his spot.
During his nine years with Fiorentina (1954–1963), Sarti helped the team win some big titles. They won the Serie A, which is Italy's top football league. They also won the Coppa Italia, a national cup competition. On top of that, they won the European Cup Winners' Cup, a major European competition.
Joining the "Grande Inter" Team
In 1963, Sarti moved to Internazionale, also known as Inter. Here, he became a key player in the famous "Grande Inter" team. This team was managed by Helenio Herrera and was known for its strong defense. Sarti worked closely with defenders like Burgnich, Facchetti, and Armando Picchi. Their defensive style was called "catenaccio", which means "door-bolt" in Italian. It was a very tough defense that made it hard for opponents to score.
With Inter, Sarti achieved even more success. In his five seasons there, he won two Serie A titles. He also won two European Cups, which is the biggest club competition in Europe. And they won two Intercontinental Cups, proving they were the best team in the world.
Later Career
After leaving Inter in 1968, Sarti played one season for Juventus (1968–69). He was a backup goalkeeper there. He then joined Unione Valdinievole in 1969 and played until he retired from football in 1973.
Playing for Italy
Giuliano Sarti also played for the Italian national team eight times between 1959 and 1967. However, he never played in a major tournament like the World Cup. This was because there were many other talented Italian goalkeepers at that time. He played his first international game on November 29, 1959, against Hungary. The game ended in a 1–1 draw.
Sarti's Unique Playing Style
Many football experts consider Sarti to be one of the best Italian goalkeepers ever. He was known for being very consistent and reliable. He was excellent at stopping shots. People also admired his calm attitude and strong mindset. He had a great sense of where to be in goal, which helped him make saves look easy rather than needing big, athletic dives.
Sarti was also known for changing how goalkeepers played in Italy. He was like a "sweeper keeper". This means he would often come out of his goal area to stop opposing attackers or to help his team start plays by passing the ball to his defenders. When facing a player one-on-one, he would stay closer to his goal line. He would keep his body facing the shooter to give himself more time to block the ball. This style was quite unusual for his time but was very effective. Sarti himself called it "geometric" rather than "reactive".

After Retirement
After retiring from playing football in 1973, Giuliano Sarti also worked as a manager. He managed the team Lucchese.
Death
Giuliano Sarti passed away in Florence on June 5, 2017. He was 83 years old and died after a sudden illness.
