Giuseppe Recco facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Giuseppe Recco (born in 1634 – died May 29, 1695) was an Italian painter from the Baroque period. He was especially good at painting different kinds of still lifes, which are pictures of objects that don't move, like food or flowers.

Giuseppe Recco's Art Journey

Giuseppe Recco was born in Naples, Italy. He probably learned to paint from his own family, including his father, Giacomo Recco, and his uncle. Later, he improved his skills even more with Paolo Porpora, who had been one of his father's students.

Between 1644 and 1654, Giuseppe spent time in a region called Lombardy with his uncle. There, he was inspired by the paintings of Evaristo Baschenis.

As Giuseppe Recco became more famous, King Charles II invited him to come to Spain. His paintings of food, both vegetables and animals, were very popular there. People often compare his painting style to that of Giovan Battista Ruoppolo, who also learned from Porpora.

Early in his career, Giuseppe started by painting flowers. But then he began to paint more varied still lifes, like scenes with different foods. He was one of the first Italian painters to do this.

Some people believe Recco might have died in Alicante, Spain, before he could reach Madrid. However, other old writings say he lived in Madrid for seven years and even became a Knight in the Order of Calatrava.

Giuseppe's children, Nicolo and Elena, also became painters, following in their father's footsteps.
