Club Career Highlights
Signori was born in Alzano Lombardo, Italy. When he was young, he played in the youth team for Internazionale. However, the club let him go because they thought he was too short to become a professional player.
He then started his professional career with Leffe (1984–86). After that, he played for Piacenza (1986–87 and 1988–89) and Trento (1987–88). He also played for Foggia (1989–92).
Success at Lazio
The most successful part of Signori's career was with Lazio (1992–97). He became the top goal scorer in Italy's Serie A league three times. This happened in 1993, 1994, and 1996. In 1996, he shared the top scorer title with another player, Igor Protti.
After Lazio, he moved to Sampdoria for a short time in 1998.
Time at Bologna
From 1998 to 2004, Signori played for Bologna. He helped Bologna qualify for the 1998–99 UEFA Cup by winning the 1998 UEFA Intertoto Cup that season. Bologna also reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and the Coppa Italia in the same season.
Overall, Signori scored 188 goals in Italy's top division. This makes him one of the highest goal scorers in the league's history. He shares this record with famous players like Alessandro Del Piero and Alberto Gilardino.
Signori also set a record for scoring in 10 straight away games in Serie A. This happened between May 1992 and February 1993. He also holds the record for scoring in 9 consecutive away games in a single season. He achieved this with Lazio during the 1992–93 season.
Later Career
After Bologna, he played for Iraklis Thessaloniki in Greece in 2004. In 2005, he signed a contract with the Hungarian team MFC Sopron. He finished his professional playing career there.
International Career
Signori played for the Italian national team 28 times. He scored seven goals for his country between 1992 and 1995.
His main international tournament was the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He played six games in this World Cup. Italy reached the final, but they lost to Brazil after a penalty shootout. Signori did not play in the final match. Even though he didn't score in the tournament, he helped his team by assisting goals. He set up Dino Baggio's winning goal against Norway. He also assisted Roberto Baggio's winning goal against Spain in the quarter-finals.
Playing Style
Giuseppe Signori was a fast and hard-working striker. He was known for his powerful and accurate shots. He was also very good with his left foot.
He could play in different attacking roles. Early in his career, he often played as a left winger or a second striker. In these roles, his speed and great technique were very useful. He was good at crossing the ball and passing accurately. He was also known for cutting in from the left side and scoring goals by placing the ball perfectly with his left foot.
Signori was also excellent at taking free kicks and penalty kicks. He had a unique way of taking them without a run-up. When taking penalties, he would often watch the goalkeeper. He would wait for the keeper to move before kicking the ball. This often sent the keeper the wrong way. He scored 44 penalties out of 52 attempts. This makes him one of the most accurate penalty takers in Serie A history.
He is one of only two players to score three goals from free kicks in a single Serie A game. He did this for Lazio in a 3–1 win against Atalanta in 1994. To improve his free-kick accuracy, he would practice by curving the ball over tall artificial walls.
Besides his goal-scoring, he was known for his leadership. However, he sometimes had injuries during his career.
After Retirement
After ending his playing career, Signori worked as a football expert for a radio station. He also served as a director of football for Ternana Calcio from 2008 to 2009.
In 2011, Signori faced accusations related to football matches. He was banned from any football-related activities for five years. However, in 2021, he was found not guilty due to a lack of evidence. Later in 2021, the president of the FIGC officially pardoned Signori. This meant he was allowed to return to football.
