Geography of Gladstone
Gladstone is found in the western part of Henderson County. A road called Illinois Route 164 goes right through the village. If you go north on this road for about 5 miles (8 km), you will reach Oquawka. This is the main town, or county seat, for the county.
If you travel south for about 1 mile (1.6 km) from Gladstone, you will reach U.S. Route 34. The city of Burlington, Iowa, is about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Gladstone. You can get there by taking IL-164 and then US-34.
The village of Gladstone covers a total area of about 0.36 square miles (0.93 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
History of Gladstone
Gladstone has an interesting past. It grew from a village that belonged to the Meskwaki people in the 1820s. A leader named Taimah was in charge of this village.
The village was first called "Sagetown." This name came from Gideon Sage, who owned the land where the town was planned. Later, the name was changed to Gladstone. It was named after a famous English politician called William Ewart Gladstone.
