Gladys Caroline Barron (born Logan) was a talented English artist. She was known for making sculptures and paintings, especially portraits (pictures of people). She lived from 1884 to 1967.
Her Life Story
Gladys was born in Bengal, India. When she was a child, her family moved back to England. She lived in St Albans for a while and studied art in London. Later, she moved to Scotland.
She learned art at the St John's Wood Art School in London. Her teacher was Gertrude Bayes. Gladys married Evan Barron, who was a historian and ran a newspaper called The Inverness Courier. They lived in a house called Westerlea House. Gladys owned this house until she passed away in 1967. After that, it became a hotel.
Her Amazing Art
Gladys Barron showed her artwork often at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1925 to 1964. She also exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts between 1946 and 1953.
She regularly displayed her art at the Royal Academy too. For example, in 1931, she showed a bronze sculpture called William Lawrence, Esq.. In 1959, she exhibited another bronze sculpture, Jawi, North Borneo. It's possible she first showed art at the Royal Academy in 1912. This was a bronze sculpture named Echo, shown under her maiden name, 'G. Logan'.
Gladys Barron was a very important artist in her community. When the Art Society of Inverness started in 1944, she became its very first President.
