Glenblair (sometimes spelled Glen Blair) was once a small community in Mendocino County, California. It wasn't a city or a town with its own government. Instead, it was an "unincorporated community," meaning it was part of the wider county area. Glenblair was located about 15 miles (24 km) north of Comptche. It sat at an elevation of 207 feet (63 meters) above sea level.

Glenblair: A Lumbering Community

Glenblair was an important place for cutting and shipping wood. It was a busy lumbering community from 1885 to 1928. The community was named after the Glen Blair Lumber Company. This company was very active in shipping lumber from the area.

Life in Early Glenblair

The heart of Glenblair was its sawmill, where logs were cut into planks. But it wasn't just a place for work. The community also had buildings for daily life. There was a school for children to learn. A social hall was available for community gatherings and events. People could buy what they needed at the general store. There was even a saloon. A post office served the community from 1903 until 1928.

The End of an Era

The lumbering operations at Glenblair eventually stopped. The sawmill closed down in 1925. This meant there was no longer a main reason for the community to thrive. The logging railroad that connected Glenblair to Fort Bragg was removed in 1942. Without the sawmill and the railroad, the community slowly faded away.

Visiting Glenblair Today

Today, not much is left of the original Glenblair community. You can reach the old townsite by following a hiking trail. It's a quiet place now, with only a few signs of its past. However, a new place called Glen Blair Bar opened in 2022. It is located near the old townsite. You can only get to this bar by taking a special stop on the California Western Railroad. This railroad is also known as the "Skunk Train."
