About Glen Dean
Glen Dean is found at the western end of Kentucky Route 108. It once had its own post office, but it closed on June 22, 1991.
How Glen Dean Got Its Name
The name Glen Dean comes from two old Scottish words. The word glen means a narrow valley. The word dean also means valley. So, the name basically means "valley valley"!
Some people also say that Glen Dean was named after a man named William Johnson Dean. He owned a very large area of land, about 2,700 acres, in the region.
The community is located along a stream called Daniels Creek. This creek was reportedly named after a black man named Daniel who sadly drowned there a long time ago.
Life in the Past
In the late 1800s, the very last wild turkey in Breckinridge County was hunted near Glen Dean. This happened close to where the first Goshen Baptist Church was located.
In 1891, a new railroad line was built through Glen Dean. This was the Louisville, Henderson & St. Louis railroad. The railroad helped the community grow a lot. That same year, a company called the Dean Tie Company started up. They made wooden railroad ties, which are the big wooden beams that support railroad tracks.
By the early 1900s, a big company called the American Tobacco Company had a warehouse in Glen Dean. For a while, the community also had many important businesses. These included a bank, a school, a hotel, a doctor's office, a drugstore, and even a blacksmith shop.
Churches in the Community
Two churches were important parts of the Glen Dean community. A Methodist church was active there from 1903 to 1956. The Goshen Baptist Church, which had been in another location, moved into Glen Dean in 1904.
Changes Over Time
Life in Glen Dean changed significantly when the railroad stopped its services in 1941. After the railroad left, most of the businesses in the community also closed down. The community's post office, which had served the area for many years, finally closed its doors on June 22, 1991.
