Early Beginnings and Naming
In 1779, Sinclair Hardin, who was Captain William Hardin's cousin, was killed by the Shawnee people near Big Springs. This happened during one of the first trips into the Kentucky wilderness.
A year later, in 1780, Captain William Hardin built a fort in this area. It was a frontier fort, meaning it was a defensive outpost in a new, unsettled region. People called the settlement "Hardin's Fort" or "Hardin's Station" back then.
William Hardin officially received land for this area in 1786. This land would later become the city of Hardinsburg.
Growth and Development
William Hardin planned out the town of Hardinsburg in 1782. For its first 100 years, the town grew slowly. It did not reach 1,000 residents during that time.
In 1800, Hardinsburg became the official government center for the new Breckinridge County. The very first courthouse was a log cabin built in 1801. The town's post office opened on January 1, 1803. It was sometimes called "Breckinridge Court House" or "Hardinburg."
The state government officially made Hardinsburg a city on May 3, 1890.
