Glen Frazer is a small farming community in Contra Costa County, California. It's an unincorporated area, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. Instead, the county helps manage it.
This community sits about 8 miles (13 km) north of Orinda. It is located in a valley, or "glen," at an elevation of 295 feet (90 meters) above sea level.
What is Glen Frazer?
Glen Frazer was once known as Frazerville. It became important because it was a train station stop. The Santa Fe Railroad used this station. Today, the BNSF Railway still uses the tracks that run through the canyon.
You can find Glen Frazer along Franklin Canyon Road. A sign still marks where the old train station used to be. It's near the town of Martinez, California.
The Story Behind the Name
The land for the train station was sold to the Santa Fe Railroad by the Frazer family. An early rancher in the area was named Frazer.
Interestingly, there was never a person named "Glen Frazer." The "Glen" part of the name comes from the fact that the community is located in a glen. A glen is a narrow valley, often with a river or stream running through it.
Post Office History
Glen Frazer also had a post office for a while. It first opened from 1898 to 1899 under the name Frazerville. Later, it reopened from 1906 to 1919. This shows that the community was active enough to need its own mail service during those years.
