The Story of Glencoe House
Building a Grand Home
Glencoe House was built in 1895. A famous architect named Rowand Anderson designed it. It was built for Lord Strathcona as a gift for his wife, Isabella. Imagine building such a big house just for your family!
From Home to Hospital
This grand house had many different uses over the years. During the Second World War, it became a military hospital. It helped soldiers who were injured during the war.
After the war ended, Glencoe House changed again. For a while, it was used as a maternity hospital. This means it was a place where babies were born. This continued until the 1960s.
Later, the house became a hospital for older people, often called geriatric patients. It served this purpose for many years until it finally closed its doors in 2009.
A New Beginning as a Hotel
After the hospital closed, Glencoe House was put up for sale. Local people tried to buy it to keep it for the community. They needed to raise a lot of money, about £1.5 million, to buy and fix up the building. Sadly, they could not get enough money in time. Some funding they hoped for was not available.
In 2011, a private buyer purchased the house. They spent time and effort to restore it. In August 2012, Glencoe House opened again, but this time as a beautiful hotel. Now, people can stay there and enjoy its history and the stunning views of Glencoe.
