Glenlochar Barrage at the end of Loch Ken

Glenlochar is a small village in Scotland. It is found on the western bank of the River Dee. This area is part of Dumfries and Galloway. Glenlochar is about three miles north of Castle Douglas. It is a quiet place with a lot of interesting history.

What's in a Name?

The name Glenlochar comes from very old languages. These languages were spoken in Britain a long time ago. The word "Lochar" might mean "marshy water." It could also mean "bright" or "shining." The first part of the name, "Glen," means "a valley." So, Glenlochar could mean "the valley of the marshy water." Or perhaps "the bright valley."

A Look Back in Time

Ancient Roman Fort

Long ago, the Romans built a large fort here. It was on the eastern side of the River Dee. This was right across from Glenlochar. The fort was built in 81 AD. A Roman leader named Gnaeus Julius Agricola ordered its construction. The fort covered an area of about seven acres. Today, you can still find parts of its buried remains. Locals call the area "Abbey Yard." This name came from old maps that mistakenly showed an abbey there.

World War II Training Camp

During World War II, Glenlochar was a training site. Soldiers learned how to build Bailey bridges here. These bridges were special. They could be put together quickly to help troops cross rivers. You can still see the concrete foundations of the old camp. In 2002, an old bomb shell was found at the site. Experts safely removed it with a controlled explosion.
