What is the Glenn Building's History?
The Glenn Building was constructed in 1923. Around the same time, a new bridge called the Spring Street viaduct was built. This led to many new buildings appearing on the west side of downtown Atlanta. The nearby Bona Allen Office Building was one of these new structures.
Who Designed the Building?
This ten-story building was designed by an architect named Wadley B. Wood from Washington, D.C.. It was originally used for offices. The building was named after John Thomas Glenn, who used to be the mayor of Atlanta. A mayor is a leader of a city.
How Did the Building Change Over Time?
In 1928, a special Art Deco style parking garage was built next to the Glenn Building. However, this garage was taken down in the 1990s. A bigger parking garage was built in its place. In the late 1980s, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta bought the building. They thought about expanding there, but later decided to move to midtown Atlanta instead. So, they sold the building.
Becoming a Hotel
In 2003, a group called Central Atlanta Progress listed the Glenn Building as one of the top 10 places that needed new development in downtown Atlanta. It was listed alongside other empty or old buildings like the Medical Arts Building and the Winecoff Hotel.
In 2006, the building had a big makeover that cost $6 million. It was turned into a boutique hotel. This hotel became part of the Autograph Collection under Marriott International. Many people say the Glenn Hotel was the very first boutique hotel in downtown Atlanta. In 2008, the building was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 2015, an artist named Alexi Torres was asked to paint a mural on one side of the building.
