John Thomas Glenn (born March 21, 1844 – died March 14, 1899) was an important leader in Atlanta, Georgia. He served as the city's 31st Mayor from 1889 to 1891. His father, Luther Glenn, was also a mayor of Atlanta. Like his father, John Thomas Glenn was a lawyer.

John Thomas Glenn's Life Story
Early Life and Education
John Thomas Glenn was born on March 21, 1844. He grew up in McDonough, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. This happened just before the university closed in September 1863.
Service During the Civil War
After his studies, John Thomas Glenn joined the Confederate States Army. He served as a captain during the American Civil War. This was a major conflict in American history.
Family and Professional Life
On April 23, 1873, John Thomas Glenn married Helen Augusta Garrard. She was from Columbus, Georgia. Her father was also a lawyer. John and Helen had four children who lived to be adults.
Their children were Isa Garteray Urquhart Glenn, a novelist. Garrard Glenn became a well-known lawyer and law professor. Helen Mildred Lewis Glenn married Theodore Gordon Ellyson. He was the very first pilot in the U.S. Navy. Their youngest son, William Louis Glenn, also became a lawyer.
John Thomas Glenn worked as a lawyer in Atlanta. He later became the city's mayor. He passed away less than ten years after his time as mayor.
The Glenn Building
Money from John Thomas Glenn's estate helped build the Glenn Building. This building is located in Atlanta. It was finished in 1923. The building was named in his honor.
