History of Glenside Campus
Early Days: Bristol Asylum
Back in 1844, a hospital called St Peter's Hospital in Bristol was too crowded. It was a place for people with mental health issues who were poor. So, the city decided to build a new, larger hospital outside the city.
This new hospital, called Bristol Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1861. It was designed by Henry Crisp. It was built next to the Stapleton Workhouse, which is now Blackberry Hill Hospital.
Becoming a War Hospital
In 1914, during World War I, the hospital was taken over by the army. It was renamed Beaufort War Hospital. Most patients were moved to other hospitals. About 45 patients stayed to help work on the hospital grounds.
A famous artist named Stanley Spencer worked here as a medical orderly from 1915 to 1916.
Glenside Hospital's New Name
After the war ended in 1919, the hospital went back to helping people with mental health needs. Before World War II, its name changed to Glenside Mental Hospital.
Later, with new healthcare laws in 1959, it became known simply as Glenside Hospital. By 1961, it cared for over 1,000 patients.
Merging with Blackberry Hill Hospital
In January 1993, Glenside Hospital joined with the nearby Manor Park Hospital. They became one hospital called Blackberry Hill Hospital. Many patients from Glenside were then able to receive care closer to their homes. Others moved into new buildings on the former Manor Park site for long-term care.
Glenside Becomes a University Campus
In 1996, the Glenside site was bought by the University of the West of England (UWE). It was turned into the UWE Faculty of Health and Social Care. Today, it's known as the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences. It's where students learn about many different health professions.
Glenside Hospital Museum
The Glenside Hospital Museum was started by Dr Donal F. Early. It used to be in the canteen, but it has moved to the old hospital chapel. This chapel is also a Grade II listed building.
The museum has many items and pictures from the history of Glenside Hospital. It also shows items from other local hospitals that cared for people with learning disabilities.
